New York Skin Care: Summer Product Recommendations Part I

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This post begins our seasonal series summing up summer skin care product recommendations from leading beauty/fashion magazines, from the style sections of leading newspapers nationwide, and from our favorite blogs.

Ezy-Breezy Sunblocks

Neutrogena’s Fresh Cooling Sunblock Gel gets a thumbs-up from the Washington Post for effective protection, a soothing feel, and a completely clear formula, so there is no annoying white residue. Marie Claire (June Issue) gives a plug to another product of the same company, Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock, which the Neutrogena Web site describes as feeling like you have nothing on, but offering a broad-spectrum protection to help prevent sun damage.

Moisturizering Tanners

When it comes to moisturizers, Marie Claire also goes the Neutrogena way with the Daily Moisturizer Summer Glow, while the Washington Post is big on Jergens Natural Glow Face Daily Moisturizer combining a moisturizing effect with the appearance of a natural tan.

Speaking of tanning products, our esteemed fellow blogger, the Beauty Addict is running a month-long series that this skin-savvy lady calls Fake Bake. Check out her site to see why Beauty Addict is hot for a fake bake with L’Oreal’s Sunless Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer for Medium Skin Tones, to which the Addict gives the accolade, “one of the best gradual tanners on the market,

Training Camp Schedule Unveiled

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Via the Phillyburbs.com Web site, I found out that the Eagles have announced the schedule of practice sessions for the update training camp. Rookies and early-arriving vets will have two-a-days on July 30th and 31st before the full squad reports for a morning session on August 1 and a closed session on August 2. Two-a-days resume from the 3rd to the 13th, though certain afternoon sessions are soley for special teams. On the 14th, the team plays a mock game, but, sadly, that is closed to the public. Lehigh camp breaks after that and the team travels to Pittsburgh for its first preseason game on the 15th. I do hope to finally get to camp this year and report on the goings-on for those of you out-of-towners or others who can’t attend any sessions. The full schedule is on the Eagles’ Web site here.

Miami Beach Auto Show 2006

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Erika and I went to the 2006 Miami Beach Auto Show today at the South Beach Convention Center right across the street from our condo. It’s hard to pass up something like that, especially when we’ve seen trailers in and out of here all week loading in the cars. Only a handful of cars made a positive impression, even fewer an impression strong enough for us to get out the camera.

For starters, the Jaguar XK is seriously sexy. It was one of the first cars we saw when we walked in the door, and it remained Erika’s favorite car in the show. The guy who designed this also originally designed the newer Aston Martins, and the heritage is pretty clear. Very classy car. Erika likes the front end of the silver convertible, but would rather buy the hardtop version.

My heart wants a Miata, but my body rolls its eyes when I have to lower myself into that low-slung sports car. My knees bang themselves against the steering wheel. My hair is about an inch from the roof. I’m a sports car guy at heart, but the sad truth is that for the $25k this thing costs, I’d probably buy a Hyundai Azera instead. The Azera is Hyundai’s biggest car, going up against the Toyota Avalon. Big car, big floaty ride, very comfy, not very sporty.

The Miata’s folding hardtop looked great when down (and invisible), but not really attractive when up. If you want a Miata, either get the ragtop version or stop kidding yourself and get something more rational.

The new 4-door Jeep Wrangler is out, and I was jealous when I first saw one driving around South Beach a couple weeks ago. The 4-door proportions are great, makes perfect sense. But when I got into it at the show, I was underwhelmed. Plastic everywhere, very very cheap-looking plastic, very cheap-looking executions. Erika agreed, and we wouldn’t dream of trading in our Jeep for one of these - at least not until they improve the interior.

Before someone buys the 2007 Wrangler, they should park it next to the Toyota FJ and the Hummer H3 and compare interiors.

At least Jeep does the vehicle hardware right, as evidenced by our trip through Camp Jeep at the show. Jeep staffers drive visitors through an obstacle course, and both Erika and I were hanging on to everything and anything. Makes me want to go to a Jeep Jamboree.

If I got into an accident and my Jeep got totalled, I’m not sure what I’d buy next. I’d probably scale back and get something more economical now that I’ve got a 35-mile commute to work. When I drive our old Saturn and the Jeep back-to-back, I actually prefer the Saturn for the commute just because it’s quieter. That would be the one thing pushing me toward the Hyundai Azera, depending on how a test-drive went.

Hopefully, I won’t have to make that decision for a while!

The power of pop culture

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I will be the first to admit that I am a huge consumer of pop culture. I like to watch good TV (no, it’s not an oxymoron) and film, I keep up with the latest in music (yes, some of it is awful), love video games, and read the occasional novel (though most of my reading these days is non-fiction). It comes through every now and then, like in my October post “Every soul is perfect” - Is there autism in heaven? (Redux), a reflection on how autism was treated on the CBS show Ghost Whisperer.

In response to that post, Ian Parker submitted the following:Um, regarding heaven and ‘perfect souls’, I would hope that people do not determine their religious beliefs based on the pseudo-religious-philosophical musings of the writers of Ghost Whisperer. At least take the time to consider what Homer has to say before coming to any final decision on such weighty matters. I share Ian’s hope that people are smarter than that, and am doing my part by helping my sons understand what they consume in a smart way, I am a bit of a pessimist when it comes to actually thinking this is the case (a rare instance of a glass-half-empty feeling on my part).

For good or ill, pop-culture is a driving force in many (most?) people’s perception of the world and their actions in the world. Because of that one episode of Ghost Whisperer, I would venture a guess that many people’s perceptions of autism now include one of “imperfection” here on Earth, the image of a “lost soul” trapped inside an uncooperative body.

Why am I re-hashing this, you may ask. These thoughts came to mind as I came toward the end of Roy Grinker’s new book, Unstrange Minds. In it, Grinker relates the story of how a popular film in Korea has helped reshape Korean attitudes about autism in a positive way. From the book (page 256-257, sorry for the long excerpt):That month a low-budget Korean film entitled Malaton (spelled the way the main character pronounces the English work “marathon”) was released. The film was based loosely on the real-life story of a young runner name Bae Hyong-Jin. Bae worked part-time on an assembly line in a tool factory when, at the age of seventeen, he ran a marathon in Chuncheon, Korea, in 2 hours 57 minutes. While not anywhere near elite runner times, which are under 2 hours 8 minutes, Bae’s time was enough to earn him national recognition. Why? Because Bae Hyong-Jin has autism.

But the film is not about running. It’s about the complexity of autism as a disorder and the problems people with autism confront in their family and social lives. it is one of the most realistic and compelling cinematic representations of autism that I’ve ever seen. The film was made after the Korean media began to publish stories about people with autism. The media had begun to publish the stories because parents, informed by the Internet and the international media, started to talk about autism in public.

Within one month after its release, more that 10 percent of the Korean population had seen the movie, and it was the second-largest moneymaker in the Korean film industry in 2005. Largely as a consequence of the film, millions of Koreans have a least a basic understanding of autism. On web site chat boards, disability rights advocates, parents, and educators in Korea are claiming that more diagnoses are being made, that people are more willing to bring their children with autism out in public, and that educators are more willing to accommodate children with autism in their classrooms. No one knows whether these changes will last, but optimism is sweeping the country. Parents of children with developmental problems think that their children may have brighter future than they previously imagined. While autism is much more public in the US than it is in Korea, there is still a lot of ignorance of what exactly autism is, what it means, how it should be handled, etc. Any news story, TV show, or film that deals with the topic is absorbed by a curious public. And, in the absence of any other information (that doesn’t require actually going out and finding it), what people see from these sources is what they will believe, what they will think is the truth.

What if the film the Koreans had seen were Autism Every Day? Their pre-existing stereotypes would have been confirmed. Here in the US, what if Autism Speaks had had the budget to put up a couple of spots during the Super Bowl, with the largest single TV audience in history? What if NBC had broadcast the Super Bowl?

As much as we may wish it were not so, we can’t ignore the power of pop-culture and the influence it has had, and will continue to have, on the public perception of autism.

Two Years In a Row: BlawgWorld and MauledAgain

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

For the second year in a row, MauledAgain has been featured in the latest Blawgworld. Take a look at BlawgWorld 2007. This honor follows the inclusion of MauledAgain in BlawgWorld 2006, which I reported in MauledAgain Featured in Blawgworld 2006. What I wrote then is worth repeating, in fewer words: I’m delighted that MauledAgain has been spotlighted, especially when there are so many new blogs popping up throughout the cyberworld. Please, do visit Technolawyer and consider joining. Law blogging has continued to grow, and it’s most helpful to have Technolawyer providing guidance as we navigate through the options. When you visit, tell them I sent you. Tell them thanks for featuring a law blog that you read. And rather than tell you which of my postings was featured, I’ll let you find out when you browse through your copy of the e-book.

Memorial Day: remembering and honoring sacrifice

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Every town, small and large, will host  Memorial Day ceremonies today to remember those who gave their lives for this country.  Congressman Walz will attend three in Southern Minnesota:Nicollet Memorial Day Event

All events are free and open to the press and public.Local newspapers throughout Minnesota have published accounts of veterans. Perhaps the  most moving is this story of a son's anguish at his discovery of his father's WWII memoir, in the Winona Daily News: The hidden costs of war: Family discovers a side they never knew.   Also in the Winona Daily News, a story of veterans pitching in provide a local veterans center in American Legion plans new center.

One of the things I'll be doing this morning is helping a friend plant some apple and cherry trees. One of them will be in honor of my two uncles who died in World War II.

I never knew them, since both perished before I was born, and so their memories always seemed to just be the hole in the fabric of my mother's large and fruitful Watonwan County Irish Catholic family. There were tons of first cousins to play with as a kid, and then there were just names for the two uncles, those two men who never married or had children.  As I grew up and listened to the stories of other uncles who came back from the war, my appreciation of their sacrifice deepened.

No politics today.
